Your looking a a true greenhorn when it come it chickens. Fer ( yeah that's right I said "FER"... That how we roll in north AL) FER
starters I do not have a single chicken yet. I have a co-worker that is giving me a couple of Silkies to start out with. What might I have to look forward to with Silkies ? I also plan on getting a couple of good egg layers.... Suggestions would be appreciated. Just keep in mind I have 3 kids(ages are 7, 4 and 2) that I will involve with the care of these chickens. Thanks in advance.

Glad you joined us! The Learning Center would be a good place to start. Have you got a coop for them yet? If you're the DIY type there are some lovely designs in the Coops section that you can look at for inspiration and ideas. Silkies is not a breed I'm very familiar with, but I have heard lots of good things about them, such as that the are the sweetest things, wonderful pets and walking, clucking incubators. (They are a notoriously broody breed.) There are a few discussions on them here, where you can get more info, like this one:

) For good layers you have quite a few options, have a browse through the Breeds section and the Reviews section to see what your options are and learn more about them. Enjoy the site!
 
Welcome to BYC! My advice is to get chickens around the same age as the Silkies, in my experience non-crested breeds can pick on the Silkies. Good luck to you.

Yes, I've also heard silkies are very prone to going broody. For good egg layers you might want to try sex links or Rhode Island Red, or buff orpingtons (which are also very friendly with kids.)
 
Thanks for the info. At this time I do not have a coop. I am however a "DIYer" so I am looking at all the great ideas y'all have posted(y'all are a talented bunch).
Drumstick, thank you for the info in the Silkies. That is what I understand about them too. However when I showed my two girls a picture of a Silkie they went nuts. They loved the idea of a funny looking chicken. :) I will be looking into the Reds for my layers.
