Heya! - New member here! And new to chickenasuaruses! QC Canada

Welcome Nix. I have extremes in my cold winter and hot summers here also.
My breeds are Australorp, Rhode Island Red, and Red Sex Link. Heavier breeds do better in winter. Mine do fine in winter, better than you would think. Don't overcrowd them as there will be days they can't go outside. The other day here wind chill was
- 18! They wouldn't go outside at all. :eek: Coop got down to 17 but they did fine. Frozen water is a challenge
(there are some nice heated waterers out there)

6 is a great number to start with. Manageable and not too small

Hens do fine without a rooster.
I chose to skip the roo as mine don't free range, and they're too noisy with close neighbors.! I actually read an article where hens laid better once rooster was gone. :wee
Definitely read the posts in article section and if any questions these other folks on here know SO much.

Welcome to the BYC community @NixSiren !:frow

You have already gotten good advice regarding your questions, and now we are eager to see some pictures of your pets!

We really looove pictures. :D

Eeep! Same!

Forgive me if I'm breaking rules in posting the images here;

Quick intros; dark stripy kitty is Lex, (Lexus F, 10 months) creamy kitty is Oliver (M) (her litter mate) same age but 2x the size - they are Bengal siamese mittens. Brown stripy tabby is Squish, adopted 2 years ago his age is roughly 7 - though we're not really sure - excellent purring machine and keeps everyone in line. Magnus is the Mal/Husky cross, now into his fourth year - he is my second ever husky and he's amazing. Enjoy the pics!

Wonderful pictures & beautiful pets!

Thanks! They all have such distinct personalities! Like Lex refuses to clean herself, to a stinky fault! Oliver manages this by pinning her down and giving her a ferocious clean, which she abhors.

Magnus (the husky) is the kitty ref, in that if they start to fight he inserts himself to get them to stop. Lex sometimes also goats Magnus into play by smacking him and doing a sideways, "come play with me", hop hop hop. Then the chase is on, he's all claws and fur on the wood, so his traction isn't great right now, she takes off running and he behind her sliding into walls.

Because of the siamese in them, Oliver is a tad cross-eyed and doesn't see all that well - when he was super little he sometimes ran into walls, poor guy. He's a very large cat now but doesn't seem to understand/care that he doesn't fit on laps the way he used to... see basket pic for details. For such a big cat, he has the most pathetic little mew, he's rather endearing.

Squish is sweet, and will spook our guests by sleeping on their chest purring really loudly in the middle of the night... he does this to us too, but we've grown accustomed to it. <3
