What did you do in the garden today?

Not much in the garden today. I did a lot of weeding around the summer squash then watered them and the tomato plants. It looks my neighborhood groundhog, Lou helped himself to the struggling chard. Kind of don’t blame him. It’s been so dry lately there's not much tasty stuff around. They’re forecasting a half inch or more of rain tomorrow evening into Thursday. We really need it. Fortunately we are having another cool day. I’m waiting to see if we actually get the rain before I plant anything else. Yesterday went to BJ’s to stock up on a few things. I spotted strawberries and picked up two 2 pound packages. I’m making strawberry jam later. I tried buying jam at the grocery store but haven’t found anything that is plain old fashioned jam. The closest I got was the brand made at a nearby monastery, Trappist. I was disappointed because they use corn syrup. My home made jams consist of fruit, sugar, lemon juice and only sometimes pectin if needed. Simple. I’m increasingly hopeful I will finally get some summer squash. My plants looked really good after weeding and watering. Fingers crossed.

I decided to splurge today, so I visited a newly built Don Quixote store and tried a bowl of Japanese fried chicken Karaage and a plate of Kobe beef from two different food stands inside the store. The chicken bowl served with rice, shredded cabbage and sweet chili mayo sauce cost $15 and the beef plate served with rice, mac salad and a roasted half Romaine lettuce heart cost $17. I ate half of each plate and saved the rest for later. I was blown away by the Chicken Karaage because the crust was slightly white, light and crispy unlike the heavier crusted brown colored ones. When I got home, I did a YouTube search and found the recipe. I had to turn on English subtitles.
