What did you do in the garden today?

Sunday, my boyfriend built me a potting bench. Today I decided to pull out some abandoned pots from underneath the tomatoes and overgrowth in my garden and set to work using that potting bench. One pot that I shoved aside in the spring as a failure, greeted me with a gorgeous mango seedling! ❤️

Well, the new chick was MIA this morning. I kicked mama out of the crate and looked for it. Couldn't find it. Found the other 6 eggs tossed haphazardly around the crate and buried under dirt and straw. Chucked those out. Mama kept trying to get back in the cage. I dunked her in some cold water and closed up the cage so she can't get back in.

Her broody days are over. She will not get a 2nd chance. I had hoped her being 3 yrs old would give her the maturity to be a good mama. Sadly that doesn't appear to be the case.
What a bummer. I guess some hens don't make the best of mothers. My Betty frizzle is a great mother but will only ever hatch two eggs when broody. Her first two daughters (one remaining) is now 5yrs old and she is still happy clucking over her. The daughter has also proven herself to be a great aunty, clucking over and protecting Betty's hatchlings.
