What did you do in the garden today?

Sunday, my boyfriend built me a potting bench. Today I decided to pull out some abandoned pots from underneath the tomatoes and overgrowth in my garden and set to work using that potting bench. One pot that I shoved aside in the spring as a failure, greeted me with a gorgeous mango seedling! ❤️

Well, the new chick was MIA this morning. I kicked mama out of the crate and looked for it. Couldn't find it. Found the other 6 eggs tossed haphazardly around the crate and buried under dirt and straw. Chucked those out. Mama kept trying to get back in the cage. I dunked her in some cold water and closed up the cage so she can't get back in.

Her broody days are over. She will not get a 2nd chance. I had hoped her being 3 yrs old would give her the maturity to be a good mama. Sadly that doesn't appear to be the case.
What a bummer. I guess some hens don't make the best of mothers. My Betty frizzle is a great mother but will only ever hatch two eggs when broody. Her first two daughters (one remaining) is now 5yrs old and she is still happy clucking over her. The daughter has also proven herself to be a great aunty, clucking over and protecting Betty's hatchlings.

I canned another 4 quarts of tomatoes today. It's the rest of what I picked yesterday, leaving a few for salads. So far, I've canned 26 quarts of tomatoes and 9 jars of salsa.

Those jars are the 12 ounce ones that look like overgrown, tall half pints. Ball doesn't make them anymore; I might have to order some on Amazon. Hubby really likes that size jar for his salsa.

And... we got some rain. I don't know how much, but everything got a nice drink.
That's a lot of hard work! And a lot tomatoes! 😀 This next year won't it be wonderful to open one up? I love the smell when I do, smells like summer to me!

It's disgusting hot here with the humidity sky high. Picked tomatoes and checked on the garden. We had all that rain which was wonderful to help with our drought but this last week of high temps has dried everything to a crisp. Came inside with a handful of jalapenos to start some fire cider. By the time it's done fermenting, it will be cold and flu season.

I'm right there with you. The heat and the critter that's eating my zucchini, it's a nightmare. I'm thankful that we didn't get the 3 weeks of triple digits again like last year but it's so hot that I cannot really go out because of my breathing difficulties. Sometimes I just wish I lived in a cooler area but I'm stuck in California 🤢. I really wish it would rain
