Hi all. I thought I would join after being a lurker here for the past few months. I was looking for some info on special breeds like Phoenix, and the Yokohama chickens. I can't seem to find any breeders around North Carolina, so figured maybe it would be something great to get into to. I have regular laying hens and I fell in love just recently with our newest edition a little game rooster that some one threw out. When we got him he was tore up pretty bad, and we have had him now for about 2 weeks. He started to heal and then a possum got after him, and now he has a sprained leg, so once again he is being babied and he loves it. I am now hooked on the small breeds. Of course though I still have my Delawares, RIR's, and GLW's but I love them all to pieces however most folks in our area don't want to buy eating eggs so I always have so many eggs to turn into pickled eggs. I however want smaller chickens that I can spend time with and enjoy, as well as maybe breed, and show.

Last year was my first year at hatching out own eggs, and believe me I loved every moment of it. It was the most wonderful thing to me.

Well you are doing great - having a successful hatch. Can you offer your eggs to soup kitchens or something on that order?

If you switch to the smaller breeds they will probably not lay as many eggs - so you'd have less to deal with. Hatching chicks is great - will you have a market for them?

There are Game threads on BYC if you put that in the search box hopefully they will pop up. I'm not
very computer literate.

Also if you go to "where am I, where are you," in the social forum you can find and post on your state thread. You should be able to find someone with the breeds you desire., hopefully near you.

Well I am a paid member in another chicken forum, however it doesn't seem to be as up to date, and with as much to read as this one. This one has info on some of the more rare breeds. Personally I prefer to have rare, or critical breeds in my coop so that I can help to keep them going. I am still looking around, and finding so much here. Thanks guys for the wonderful welcome.

Welcome to BYC. Given your interest in possibly showing, I would suggest that you locate and attend a local show. View all of the birds. See who is winning, and try to get brood stock from them. It costs no more to feed 'good' birds than pet quality birds.

That is the plan. I told my husband I am tired of getting bad quality chicks, and the eggs I am getting from different places, are either all duds, not what I ordered or half breeds. I want good quality, and that means going places to get what I want. I drove all the way to Virginia to get my Delawares and only 4 were what I called show and breeding quality, so I went with just 4 rather then buying a bunch. It's worth the drive, and the time if you want good quality.
