Hi! So glad I found this site. Every good answer to my google searches seemed to lead here, so I decided to join.

I just got six chicks from TSC after a decade of begging my hubby for chickens. I am pretty sure I have five pullets and one roo. They are only a few weeks old. I’m very excited about this adventure! I also have three Brittanys so the challenge will be keeping the bird dogs away from the birds. (Good fencing and maybe a little electricity is the plan.). Any advice from experts will be appreciated!

I am an elementary Art teacher from Ohio, and will be retiring at the end of this school year. I also have three horses, five cats, two turtles, a 25 year old son, and a very tolerant husband who grew up on a farm.

Welcome to BYC. Electric fence sounds like a good idea. Your Brittanys will be on constant point outside your pen. I have a friend who has pigeons and Brittanys. When his birds are flying the youngest runs beneath the flock as long as they are flying. She is rock hard and never tires when hunting.

Two of my Brittanys are trained for field trials/hunting, and all three have been to multiple obedience classes...but I know nature will fight manners, lol. They have heard the peeping in the garage and are curious. They have learned to leave my cats alone if they don’t run; I chose barred rocks because they are docile and friendly in the hopes that they can learn to be chill with the dogs in the vicinity. We will see.
