It would be better to build a draft proof coop with insulation(if needed) than to have them in a big drafty barn

Yes, I would completely agree with you except we have a metal barn and it is fully insulated. As a matter of fact the chickens have pecked thru the plastic covering the insulation and are eating it. I didn't know that chickens were like goats! So, it is really quite warm and they have a window. All I have to do is frame it out and cut a hole in the side of the barn and make a door. Then I can add a run on the outside. Yup, I think that is my plan.
