In my family we decided we would start the new year with our first chickens

. both my wife and I have spent approximately 40 hours over the past few weeks reading this and a few other places trying to absorb as much as we can about raising chickens. Eventually we decided to buy nine 16-17 week old pullets. Hopefully we'll have eggs in the next few weeks

. We responded to a local chicken farm advertisement on craigslist. We got 3 barred rock, 3 rhode island white and 3 easter eggers (for our three kids). Thanks to all for the information you all have shared and nice to meet you

Very exciting times

Welcome. Make sure you read the Adventures of Barbara (just search for it here) so you know what your barred rock is up to... Enjoy your girls. And don't freak out if it takes time for them to settle in to their new digs before they start laying.

Welcome, and I hope you enjoy your new birds! I think you'll find that you enjoy them even more than you expected. Chickens are wonderful and far more endearing than most people expect! I hope you get answers to all of your questions here, learn a lot, and make a bunch of friends!
