Hey everybody,

Joining you all from the Twin Cities here in Minnesota. I don't currently have any chickens and may not while still living in the suburbs. I would love to though. My city allows chickens but I don't have much of an appetite to submit for a license and willingly give up more of my rights. I do have an interest in obtaining and raising quail for egg and meat production though. I'm thinking of jumbo coturnix as there's a local breeder on Craigslist.

I'm also in the early stages of guinea pig breeding. Mostly for my Basset Hound mix Buford. I may expand to rabbits some day once I get some other projects done.

Turning my backyard into a homestead eats up most of my time when I'm not at work. My lot was literally all grass when I arrived. Dug out a 1000 square foot garden the first year by hand(cut and flipped the sod in growing beds, laid down plastic mulch in walking paths). This year I dug out trenches in between the beds and then filled them with 4-6 inches of wood mulch. Ripped out rabbit fencing and mulched the border to suppress the grass.

Pretty happy with how the garden is doing now so I can focus on other things. Planted 6 fruit trees in the spring with plans on adding two more and two chestnut trees next year. Transplanting mulberry seedlings along the back border of the yard to prune for fodder. Planted blueberries, raspberries and strawberries over the weekend. I'd love to put in some asparagus but trying to figure out where. It's a low priority but high anxiety sort of thing if that makes sense.

Probably more than necessary for an introduction thread but didn't know what to say so thought I'd just talk about this year's projects. Have a good day all and thanks for reading.

Thanks for the welcome everyone!
Welcome to byc! :thumbsup Your garden sounds AWESOME! What kinds of guinea pigs do you have?

Thank you. Most of my guinea pigs are American short hairs of varying colors. I have one tan Californian, and two Abyssinians. Pictures of them are in a separate thread in Other Pets and Livestock section.

impressive work!:thumbsup Welcome to BYC from middle Tennessee :frow If you decide to go for it, there's a good breeder about an hour from you. Check out the toad thread when you have a chance.

At first your reply had me scratching my head, "What have toads got to do with what I posted?". I did a search though and wow, what an impressive sounding chicken. Thanks for the heads up.

:welcome

Great looking garden, you have been working hard! You may enjoy checking out a gardening thread I've seen on BYC...what-did-you-do-in-the-garden-today.670277
