Hi everyone! New member here. I'm going to be new to keeping and raising chickens. Right now I'm investigating the different breeds, coops and run options that might work for me. I already have my source for chickens picked out once I'm ready to purchase, but I can't really get onto her farm right now due to the whole COVID thing going on to look at her setup and speak with her in person, so I'm exploring all the information out there I can find.

My husband and I recently moved to a new-to-us home in Southern Maryland with a little over an acre and space out behind the garage where the previous owned used to house guinea hens and other assorted fowl. Whatever housed them is long gone, but at least I know the space will work for my flock. We have 2 dogs and 8 cats (all rescue) and I do fostering for a local rescue group, taking in mostly kittens. I love to garden and have a houseful of plants, and am waiting to see what is going to come up in my new yard before I start trying to make plans for any kind of landscaping. It's kind of interesting to see what's coming up.

I found this site while looking for information on coops and runs and decided to join so I could further my education before buying my birds. I'm excited to get started but want to try to make the best start I can. I look forward to expanding my knowledge base so I can make good informed decisions. I can't wait to get my own flock pecking in the yard. See you around the coop!

Hello and welcome to BYC! :frow Glad you joined.
Congratulations on your new home and your proper planning for your new chicks.
You are going to want to build a large run for the chickens if you like your landscaping plants. Chickens and nice landscaping do not go together.

😂 Agree that chickens and landscaping are not for the weak!! It's a constant battle to keep them from destroying everything...I've basically given up on the backyard! Now the front yard gets extra love and attention...you would never guess the back looks like a war zone most days!
Welcome to BYC!
