Hi everyone. I have been lurking here off and on for a while. My name is Kathy and I live in NW Kansas. We live on 20 acres just outside of a tiny town and are trying to be more involved in being self sufficient. With the kids grown up and having moved away, my husband suddenly among the Covid unemployed, and trying to stay afloat with a small sign business and infrequent part time work as a route driving substitute, we are tickled to be bringing in some adventure in poultry raising. I've been wanting to try having ducks for quite awhile and finally made the plunge! We started back in May ordering 2 Buffs, 4 Mallards, and 4 Muscovies. They were doing very well until I moved them to their outside pen. Aerial attacks were something I simply didn't think of and we lost all but three to an owl attack. I was devastated. My netting will be here early next week and I've been locking the survivors in the coop every night until we get the pen covered. I've got 10 baby runners coming next week and I'm excited to add more to my flock. Our other companion is a huge English Mastiff named Flipper. I built a duck house out of old pallets and scrap wood off of a picture that I may have seen here years ago (it's been built for two years now) and I finally got the pen constructed early this year. I'm really glad to be part of this group and learning from you all! I don't have any pictures on this computer but will try to get some to show my set up and my babies! Thanks for having me!

Welcome to BYC, Kathy! Ducks are so fun. Sorry you lost some to that owl. Can't wait to see pics?
