hi all

Hiya, Mike, and welcome to BYC! :frow

Mike, especially knowing that you are in Michigan, I think you're going to regret buying that coop. Unless it's something above the usual, (1) It will hold almost exactly HALF of the number of chickens they say it will and (2) it won't survive more than about two of our winters.

Hopefully, you've got one of the rarer prebuilts we've seen that actually are pretty good.

Otherwise, if not, I'd check Marketplace for a used ice fishing shack or a shed. You could remodel something like that pretty easy.

Hello Mike, and welcome to BYC! :frow Glad you joined.

Uh oh. Can you post a link? 98% of pre-fabs coops are garbage. They are horribly designed for chickens, made from the cheapest wood possible, are viscously undersized for the number of birds they claim they can house and never have enough ventilation.

Hi Mike,

That does look like one of the ones we're speaking of.

It's good you're handy! I highly doubt that's 1/2" hardware cloth for the run fence, which is the standard for keeping chickens safe from varments.

You'll note the weaker areas as you put it together that will need fortifying, and it's probably very light so will need to be anchored down. Maybe you can add onto it even if you get more than four chickens in there. The 90 sq foot run is good for six chickens. They don't give sq feet for the coop, but my guess is that's only going to work for four to six, not the eight they claim.

If possible, you could take out two or three of the four nest boxes to give more room in there. You only need one box for every four or five chickens.

I'm sure you can make it workable. :)
