Hi I'm Tami from southeastern Washington.Just now signing in but have been lurking since April when we got 15 brown sexlink chicks. I really like this forum and have learned a lot. We got the chicks for their egg production but want to introduce some different breeds in eventually. My husband built a chicken tractor that the hens are in and we move it daily around the farm (we are dry land wheat farmers farming 1200 acres). I'm hoping once they're a bit bigger to be able to free range them but now I worry about the cats, owls, Hawks and such :( . Anyway hi.

Hi Tami, welcome to BYC!

I think a lot of people lurk before they join. You're probably getting a lot of eggs now with the 15 sex link girls! We have 3 in our mixed flock and they are our most dependable layers (plus have some of the funniest personalities). What other breeds are you interested in?

It's nice to have you here, feel free to ask any questions you may have.

If you would like to 'meet' other members from WA, you can find them here:

No eggs yet, this is our first time having chickens so not sure when they start laying. I figure they're about 11 1/2 weeks old now.

We were thinking maybe some buff orpingtons and my husband has fond memories of barred rocks. I'm not sure if its advisable to have different breeds together?

Oops sorry, I mis-read when you got them. Our red sex links began laying around 18-19 weeks. But all birds are a bit different, they'll lay when they are ready.

Sure, you can have a mixed flock (we do and so do a lot of other people). It makes life easier for everyone if they are about the same size like the buffs and the BR and SL. When it comes time to getting your new chickens, it would probably be helpful to check out how to integrate the new birds with your existing flock. There is an article in the Learning Center on that and lots of threads you can read up on.

Good luck!

Welcome to Backyard chickens. As a rule chicks brought up together (different breeds) do fine in flocks. Some breeds that do get bullied and feather pecked are the docile ones like Silkies and Polish - who look quite different than the average chicken.
