Hi all, my name is Autumn. We recently got 6 chickens. They were all about 2 months old now and getting big. Healthy, acting like regular chickens. Well when we got them we built a coop, nice and sturdy with locks on any exterior opening and secured chicken wire screen all around whatrwe wanted to be their run area and back to the coop. So its a square set up with one corner being the coop and the rest being run area, all of it fenced in and the fence attatched to the coop itself. The wire also covers over the run to make a chicken wire roof. We flared the wire out on the ground about 6 inches to discourage any predators but it must not have been enough. 2 days ago I found one chicken missing. No sign of struggle, no blood, no feathers. Nothing out of place. Thought perhaps my 3 yr old opened the door after I closed it and she got out on her own. But then this morning, all 5 other chickens are gone. Same story, no feathers, no blood, no sign of struggle in the least. I see a spot where the wire may have been crawled under and one where it may have been crawled out of, but I am at a loss. It was decently tight to the ground, no sign of attack, and 5 birds in one night. What do you suspect did this? Please advise, I really wanna protect my chickens the next time around and just don't know what to do next. Thanks so much!

Chicken wire is useless. You need to use hardware cloth only on all exterior areas of the coop and run. Chicken wire can be chewed thru, pulled apart and bent very easily. So hardware cloth only. You also need to bury wire or some sort of base around the run. Things are going to dig and crawl under all the time. Once the first chicken was taken, the critter, most likely a raccoon, came back for the others.

You might want to rethink your run construction and post some questions in our Coop and Run Construction forums for help with getting it build to keep predators out...

I am so sorry and I hope you can get this all solved soon.

Hi and

Sorry to hear of your loses. Weird there were no feathers at all where
something dragged 5 birds out under the wire. Could it have been a
human? Times are hard. Maybe padlock your coop and yard?

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! Sorry about your chicks. X2 bury wire around the bottom. There are a number of predators that might have done something like that, foxes are often bad about coming and getting multiple birds... and humans are a thought also as mentioned. You might want to check out the Predator forum for ways to predator proof your coop. www.backyardchickens.com/f/13/predators-and-pests

Thanks so much. My husband has decided to build a wooden lower part to the whole rum so as to prevent the same entrance method, hopefully. Human was also a thought here, just wanted to believe I was being paranoid I guess and hearing it from you guys makes me feel like I am not nuts. We do have foxes around here, definite sightings in neighboring yards and farms. Would a single fox have been able to take 5 birds without leaving any blood or anything? I would believe maybe 1 if it was a surprise and just carried it out but that many seems crazy! Of course, weirder things have happened right? Lol

Welcome to BYC! Sorry for your losses. TwoCrows has given you some very good advice.

If your losses have continued, you should get a game camera and set it up. Then you will find out who or what type of predator is taking your birds. Nowadays it's common for human predators to take chickens and eggs if given the chance especially, when they know your coming & goings.
