Hi and Help!

Hi! I'm new to this group and really need a bit of advice. I have a two and a half year old pekin duck that has a filled sac on one side of her face. I have been giving her Clavamox for two weeks, three times daily and I thought it had been treating what my vet called sinisitis quite successfully. She had been eating and drinking normally up until yesterday. Today the sac is huge and is almost covering her eye. Her bill is staying partially open, making eating impossible. If anyone has any advice, please let me know! I live in a small town and my vet is not a poultry vet - he googles her symptoms and prescribes based on what he reads. Any advice would be really appreciated!

Has he thoroughly checked for a foreign body of some sort? Can you get a closer picture of it? He's sure it isn't an abcess?

He hasnt tested for a foreign body, but the sac is spongy. This is a bit gruesome, but I actually squeezed it several days ago and drained the clear fluid - its an empty pocket right now. I will try to get a better picture when I feed them shortly.

Did you tell the vet that? It sounds like an abscess that needs a drain put in for it to heal properly. I'm not sure how to keep a drain in a duck, though; that might be tough.

He actually squeezed it at the last visit also - clear liquid came out of her nostrils. Just let her float in a tub of water for about 30 minutes and she tried to clean herself.

Ah I see. I misunderstood, didn't know it is coming out of her nostrils.

Are you ensuring all water she has access to is very clean? Do ducks blow out their nostrils into the water like my goose does? If so, she will be blowing infected mucus/pus and bacteria into the water so you will want to make sure to clean it often. I would also isolate her from the other duck to ensure the bacteria does not get passed to the other(s).

Have you asked the vet about a possible antibiotic shot and or/antibiotic sinus flush?

Looking at her I feel so bad for her. I know she must feel miserable. Sinus infections can be difficult to treat, even harder when it gets to the point that she cannot eat or drink

Yeah - I'm worried sick about my Jemima. She does blow water out of her nostrils like geese. She is in her own pen though on my back porch and I am changing the water often and mixing a poultry vitamin supplement into it seeing she is not eating. I'm going to take her to the vet first thing tomorrow morning and will ask about the antibiotic shot and sinus flush. Thanks so much for your help!

Poor baby! She does look miserable so I am glad you are reaching out and trying to get to the bottom of things. Tomorrow is Monday morning. Perhaps it is time to call the vet back and give them an update. Perhaps they will have some more words of wisdom.
