Hi and new to posting anything and BYC

Hello from Kansas! I'm a day old here. This is a great site! I am new to raising chickens. I had some in the early 70's but they were old layers from a chicken farm and I didn't have them more than a year. Now here I am wanting fresh eggs everyday and a small flock just out back. I have 26 girls and a partridge cochin cockrel. The Little Dude, as my granddaughter Madison calls him, is more for the well rounded experience than anything, although I hear fertile eggs are richer in nutrients. I have 5 barred rocks, 5 blk sex links, 3 buff orps, 8 RIR, 4 New Hampshire reds and 1 black australorp. I bought 22 day old chicks in April and was raising them in a stock tank in my wood shop, covered with wire of course. Our neighbors dog went in the open door one day and killed all but 4 of my 4 wk old girls. I was heart broken but my granddaughters had been so involved that I had to be strong for them as well as myself. We went, along with my daughter, and picked out more of the same breeds as we could get at the farm store. The older ones are now 4 mo old and the others are 3 mo. I derive soo much pleasure tending them and watching them run free in the evenings. Our little carrin terrier thinks the dude is hurting the girls and keeps a very close on him when he's out. I'm silly over my girls and my farm raised hubby just smiles and offers helpful info and help when needed. Having chickens has made me more content to stay at home since gas prices are so high. We live out in the country. I love a simple life and I can't wait to have our own fresh eggs and some to share and sell. I'll need a few more customers as well once 26 hens are laying. Yikes! So far I have 5.
Have a blessed day everyone!
