Hi de hi

Have a great time on BYC!

Hello, brand new but have been reading on google for some time!!
1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
We got our first 4 in feb this year and now have 12….. oops. Chicken maths is real and I may be considering the next set of girls for next year….

(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
12 gorgeous hens, they’re all named and considered family pets

(3) What breeds do you have?
We think we have 4 warrens, 1 light Sussex, 1 silver Sussex and 1 speckled Sussex, an Araucana. Then 2 cream leg bars (hatched by a broody) and 2 “olive eggers” but these four haven’t yet started to lay.- so we will see.

(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
Gardening, animals, reading and gaming. I love being outside.

(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
2 children who keep us busy with their differing needs, a dog, cat and four Cameroon sheep.

(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community?
Been googling for months and always read the info here, but decided to actually join in!
Welcome. I am a big fan of the sussex. I have one SS hen and two SS roosters. I would love to see a picture our your silver SS if you have time to post it.

Of course!, please forgive my ignorance but I’m not sure if SS is silver or speckled! So I’m afraid you’re getting both….
Silver is a good size, but Sepckles is slightly snaller than her- the children were original with their names :) From looking through the pics on my phone, I’ve discovered all our chickens prefer to peck cameras rather than pose- so apologies they’re not amazing!

Silver lays a strange shaped egg- it’s longer and narrower than the others and she caused us panic with her first egg as she got egg bound (when we first found BYCs!) probably because it was a soft shell egg. She enjoyed her 2 days in the house being pampered and still knocks the front door when it’s raining trying to come in. We know that some people might not have kept her, but we watch her carefully and can easily identify if she lays every day/ has any issues. Since the first egg she’s been fine though. She has all black toenails, except the one that’s white and we joke it’s painted.
She’s our biggest girl but best buds with Eagle (araucana)- but not the (now grown) chicks. Eagle is allowed to push her out the way of food, dust bath and perch spots. When Eagle egg songs, Silver will go and “collect” her. Whilst grumpy looking, she is a sweetheart.

Speckles can be a bit “mean girl” at times, but has never been top of the flock. She loves lap cuddles and will get on your shoulder given half a chance.
(Please excuse all the fencing in some pics, this was when we made a large area outside the runs for the babies/ big girls to meet. It’s all now been removed, especially that green fencing which the chickens wanted to put their heads through….everyone was safe- just my sanity lost)

Would love to see some of your Sussex chickens if you get a moment too.

Adorable! :love I love your explanations of their personalities too!

Thank you, the whole family seem to tell a daily soap/ drama of their antics! Particularly when they appear outside someone’s window, they can walk all the way round the bungalow. (Some days I’m sure they do the same with us)

It’s surprised me, at the start, how individual they are- which is daft really.
