Happy Valentine Day![]()
Thank you. I have been having so much fun with them until today. It is cold but not Harrison so -low of 26 and they are protected. This morning I went out to check and feed and make sure water is unfrozen and they all ate but their combs are now pale. They started sneezing a 3 days ago and I started treating them with Vet RX as directed. I completely cleaned the run and coops for the second time in 2 weeks, removed all litter - straw and shavings etc. they stopped laying eggs 2 days ago and I assumed it was because of the dreary dark rainy days. At 8am I went back to make sure they are ok and took a treat of some cornbread and broccoli and they were all eating and had already eaten a lot of their pellets. I went back at 10:30 to see if anyone had been in the nesting boxes and one of them was dead and stiff already. It’s 27 degrees and I don’t think she froze. Worried since all are sneezing. Looking for a chicken vet now to see if the others can be treated.Welcome to BYC! So glad you decided to join us!

I'm so sorry for the loss of your hen. It sounds like they probably had an underlying respiratory condition that came to light when the weather got bad. You should probably send the body to your state lab for examination so you know what you are dealing with. Again, I'm so sorry. I hope things look up for you soon.Thank you. I appreciate your response. I actually took another hen in when I found a veterinarian that does chickens and he said it was not anything to prescribe antibiotics for but to continue with the treatment I am giving them and put something around the pen to help keep in warmer on the cold nights. I had already buried the chicken I lost. He said sometimes you just lose a chicken. The rest are all eating well and he recommended that I worm them. I didn’t know I should be worming twice a year and he said she had worms so they all do.I'm so sorry for the loss of your hen. I'm so glad you talked to vet! Also feeding cracked corn makes them them warmer ( increases metabolism)I appreciate your response.
