Hi Ya'll, I am new to the forum. My name is Ashley and I live in New Jersey, I would like to learn about chickens. However, I do have my own horse and I raise/show rabbits for years. I don't own property and my horse is boarded and I have rabbits on my property. I need everything I need to know about chickens and such. I live in a lake community and I'm not to sure if I am allowed to keep chickens on the property.

I am willing to learn about everything.

Hi from Central NY!

Find out what your town/community ordinances are before you start. Some BYCers have illegal chickens, but it is best to know what you are up against before you start. There are lots of threads that you can read to help you get started. Don't be afraid to ask questions. We are all here to help each other.

from Ohio. You might want to check the index page and look for Local Chicken Laws & Ordinances. Maybe you can find something there that will point you in the right direction. Good luck!

You can just call your town/village clerk, and they will have info. Some towns/villages have their info online. A phone call or stopping in can be just as easy.

Thanks everybody.

I've been looking every where online and my town Vernon does have a website and I've looked and it doesn't say anything. Can this be good or a bad thing? But yet say if they really don't have anything for chickens?

Sometimes it is "loosely" termed agriculture or livestock. Our village has a restriction of agricultural production is not permitted within 100 (or 150 I forget) feet of bordering properties. It does not define anything clearly, but could encompass everything. It is all in how you interpret it.

I couldn't tell from reading my town ordinances either so I called the town and asked. We are semi agricultural and they said it was ok to have a small number of chickens. Good enough for me!

Oooh ok, Thank You. I've looked every where on the website on my town and don't see anything. Also what I can remember at the NJ State fair I did see some of the chickens owner's lived in my town.

I'll ask my friend because she lives in the same town as me but she has property. If not then I'll go to the town.

This is soo frustrating, I just want to know one simples yes or no.
