I live in the high desert area of Southern California and my husband and I got our first ever chicks the first week of April. The feed store said they were 90% hen which is what we want. They are Barred Rock. We bought 4 in the hopes of having at least 3 laying hens. We lost Mitzi at 3 weeks old from illness. But the other three are growing fine, Bummer though we've got one Roo for sure as Dot, now Del is crowing like crazy but Sheila looks a lot like him and they are both HUGE. Sheila is not crowing at this time, but we are concerned we have 2 Roo's and only one hen. Our last one is all girl, small, looks very different and her name is Addie. We can't have a crower so we are wrapping our head around taking care of Del soon, if Sheila takes the lead role and is also male, will Addie be ok alone? We are bummed out about this for sure, but I guess there are no guarantees.

Hello and Welcome to BYC

,
Sorry to hear about your chickens being roosters :(. I would try and get a companion for Addie because chickens are social animals and she may get stressed or sick from being alone. I hope you can figure something out!

Hi, welcome to BYC!

I'm sorry for your loss and that Dot turned out to be a Del. Sheila might still turn out to be a girl. We have 3 BR in our mixed flock, one is huge and the other 2 are smaller but they are definitely all girls.

Chicken Girl1 is right about not wanting to have a solitary chicken. She won't be happy alone.

Good luck with your flock, nice to have you here!

Just to be sure, post photos of the other two at "what breed or gender is this." Some BR's can be difficult to sex until they lay or crow. Hope they both are pullets.

Thanks everyone. Here are some pics I just took, the Roo is always to the right. The other Barred Rock (On the left) I am unsure pullet or not.
