I live in the high desert area of Southern California and my husband and I got our first ever chicks the first week of April. The feed store said they were 90% hen which is what we want. They are Barred Rock. We bought 4 in the hopes of having at least 3 laying hens. We lost Mitzi at 3 weeks old from illness. But the other three are growing fine, Bummer though we've got one Roo for sure as Dot, now Del is crowing like crazy but Sheila looks a lot like him and they are both HUGE. Sheila is not crowing at this time, but we are concerned we have 2 Roo's and only one hen. Our last one is all girl, small, looks very different and her name is Addie. We can't have a crower so we are wrapping our head around taking care of Del soon, if Sheila takes the lead role and is also male, will Addie be ok alone? We are bummed out about this for sure, but I guess there are no guarantees.
