Hi,

First off, I can't describe how excited I am about raising chickens. I live just south of Buffalo New York and have been wanting to raise chickens for a while now. Recently, my wife's cousin's husband came home with three chicks, but they were not welcome at their house. My wife went out and bought me a small 4 chicken coop as a father's day present, but in the mean time, her cousin gave the chicks away.

While I was initially disappointed, I figured that it worked out better this way since I can pick my own breeds. I am in the process of getting a Red Comet, Australorp, and Wyandotte. However, we're going on vacation at the end of April, so I won't be getting them until early May. Luckily I have Storey's Guide to Raising Chickens and BYC to keep me busy.

My one question at this time is what daytime predators do I have to worry about in Western New York (if anyone lives around here)? We have hawks, but we have been using bird feeders for years and haven't had any attacks. I plan on free ranging in our garden with a permanent fence with buried wire fence.

Thanks for any advice. I can't wait to set up my coop when it comes in this week!

Hello: I too am a new member and have been reading up on loads of information before my new chicks come. I'm not too far from you in Southern Ontario. I have just started assembling my equipment for the brooder which I'm going to put in our heated garage. I will post a picture once I have it all set up.

I'm just not sure how to barricade off a portion of our carriage house when it's time to move them in there. We don't have a "coop" but we have an original brick 1881 carriage house which I'm hoping to utilize one-quarter of it for the chickens.

I'd be pretty excited raising chickens outside of Buffalo too! Good wings!

As far as predators go, you would be surprised how many foxes, coyotes, and coons are around that you have never seen.

Haha. Were planning on just raising hens for their eggs right now. Once we get our feet wet with that, maybe I'll think about raising some for butchering.

I'm doing the exact same thing. I got 6 chicks right now for eggs, and later this summer I'll get some for meat. Good Luck!
