Yes, I lock them up at night...LOTS of wildlife here to gobble them up! Hardly any trees or anywhere for them to roost either. Some nights..they accidentally are left out. I haven't lost any to wildlife yet; been here two years. Lucky; my neighbors have lost quite a few.
I have a sweet, gentle blue heeler/collie mix that turns Cujo when it comes to anything in the yard. I feel she might be the reason. I have seen her chase coyotes, fox... (And to think she killed a chiken when she was a pup...and I about killed her. Ironic...she protects them like they are her own now.)

Hi Everyone! I literally have used this site 100s of times before this post. I started with my first flock in 2015 with 8 hens. (I now have 30 ha!;)) I have learned so much and feel like I can so help folks learn and grow with their chicks.

(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
30! 18 mature hens, 4 2month olds, 2 4 weeks old, and 4 2 weeks old, and a momma sitting on 5 fertilized eggs! Nutty summer! But I have so much to share, and part of the reason I joined is because many of the questions I had with raising babies were not even on here. I hope I can help people learn more about chickens. They are amazing and I learn something new every year!

(3) What breeds do you have?
So, I have quite a few 'muts'; that have a Wellsummer daddy mixed with Blue Cochin, Australorp, Tan Brahmas, etc.. The 4 2 month olds are: Lavender Ameraucana, Light Brahma, Green Queen, & a Light Brahma without feathered feet (name is escaping me right now). I have 2 polish hens that are 4 weeks old: Silver laced and Buff. My 5 babies are with a Ameraucana/Rhode Island Red rooster and many mommas. We shall see! So, I have a mixture of full bread and mixed. Love them all!

(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
Just love them; love to watch them, hear them, have them all over our land and learn about how they operate in their own environment. I have had them in a coop, in a very large area of land, and now free range 100 % of the time and feel that is where they truly get to be what they are designed to be. I have gone from raising babies in my house, incubated etc.. to letting them do their thing all on their own. I even used to 'manage' them in the coop...and have learned I can never do it better than they..AND they acclimate no matter what the circumstances. Such cools stuff!

(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
Organic gardneing, canning, all things permaculture! I want to live off grid some day. I love to cook from scratch, read, and home school my children. I love to golf, country dance and I just enjoy all things outdoors!

(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
I am a single mom of 3 amazing children; 12, 10, & 8. I had one via c-section in the hospital and the other two at home without so much as an ultrasound. We adore our chickens and it is definitely a family affair. We have one dog, 4 cats and unfortunately, due to a divorce, had to get rid of our two horses, two mini donkeys, rabits and one dog. We LOVE animals and live on a farm.
I am a Holistic Health Practitioner and practice a Christian therapy called Splankna. (It is an alternative counseling that uses acupuncture, muscle testing, Emdr and a few other modalities to address traumas; mind, body and spirit are all considered when healing issues like; insomnia, addiction, depression, nightmares, etc.. )
The best thing about me is Jesus; and my faith is my rock. I live very differently than most in society; the closer I get to Jesus..I feel the farther I get from consumerism, American dream, and just most things the society finds endearing. I live with no social media, haven't watched news in over 10 years, haven't had insurance for over 10; make all our own medicine and self heal...and I don't believe in germ theory or that viruses are what scientists say they are...(all my studies point to viruses actually assist the body in healing.) Yep, I am TOTALLY different. I guess that is a good Segway to how I raise my chickens. I read a book called the Pigness of Pigs by Joe Salatin; a devout Christian and Permaculture pioneer. He tought me about animals and their design. Whenever I am trying to think about how to raise my chickens; I always think.."what did God design them for and how do they live without human intervention." This has been soooo helpful; because God gave them the natural instinct to 'do their thing'.
Anyway..I have written enough...but, thank you..anyone..who has taken the time to read. I am excited to share my findings on raising chikens. Also, this sight has helped me so much while raising them! Thank you!!!

(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community? :D
I have been reading BYC since before I purchased my first flock. 8 years. I have NO idea why I haven't joined until now! I am really excited and feel the reason is because during my newest batch of babies...I have learned so much. They are even more amazing than I originally thought. Just had to share some of it; because while looking for answers on here and the web...I couldn't find the answers to some of the things I tried. I hope my findings help folks raise their chickens with less worry and doubts. :) Over they years I have gone from lots of intervention to almost letting them 'run the show' single handidly. It has been a really cool journey! I have attached some resent favorites...hope you enjoy!

Welcome to BYC!
I love your Round Top Walk-In coop. I looked at those online last year. I wasn't sure it would be practical for me. I have a large flock and way too many broodies.
How many chickens does it hold?
Your broody and babies photo is adorable, the rooster is gorgeous, but my favorite pic is the glw hen in the blue house! You should enter that one in the POW (picture of the week) contest.
