Hi, I'm from Southern California. I only have one chicken. That's right, just one. She is a beautiful Easter Egger and lays pale blue eggs. She is basically a "house chicken," in that she prefers to be in the house with me as much as possible. She does go outside and scratch around and have a dust bath, etc., but she otherwise likes to be next to me when I'm working on the computer or perched on the couch when I'm watching TV. She roosts on top of a cat carrier at night on the dining room table. She's kind of a like a human with feathers. She gets along really well with my two cats. She got along REALLY well with my Pembroke Welsh Corgi who unfortunately passed away two weeks ago. She liked to nap next to her and my Corgi didn't mind at all. If anyone is interested in a dog breed that gets along well with chickens, I recommend Corgis. They are a herding breed.

I wanted to know if anyone else had a chicken that exhibited this type of behavior? Thank you.

Aww, how sweet! Does she have a name? I would say that chickens need another chicken for a companion but she sounds okay with your cats and you :p

I do have one chicken, "Bibby" my Black Australorp loves to be around humans.

Your EE sounds so sweet! She reminds me of some of my chickens...

I have a Buff Orpington... :) She loved to perch on my shoulder and preen my hair as a pullet. :p She outgrew my shoulder... as Orpingtons tend to be a medium-large breed... She now just plods behind me and looks for bugs while I am doing yard-work... but to this day, if I kneel down, she'll hop on my knee and preen me. ;)

I got a 'rescue' Australorp hen that was uncared for (she looked awful when I got her but made an amazing recovery)... After I brought her home, she followed me everywhere like she had an invisible string attached to my heel... She liked to be with me so much that she would try to get in the car with me when I had to go somewhere... even while the car was running. She even liked to accompany me on my bicycle. :p I don't think I had ever seen a chicken that was so trusting of 'select' humans. She was afraid of certain people... oddly.

I got a Welsummer cockerel from a free ad once... He and our big, huge mastiff dog formed a very unique bond... he would let her sniff and nuzzle him... he also liked to scratch near her and lay in the grass between her paws. :) Our mastiff would lay her head next to him and lick him... It was odd but he is the best rooster I have ever had. :p

I don't know what it is with EEs... or if it is just coincidence... but the EEs (that I have had) do not mind being separate from a flock... unlike some other breeds I have owned (My Gold/Black sex-links and Wyandottes are more prone to be stressed when separated... while my EEs don't mind and go about their business... or are contented with human companionship).

How interesting! So I guess my girl isn't that unusual. I have thought of getting some other hens for her, but I only have a small yard. I think my girl is also a top hen and I am worried she might bully another chicken. Also, I don't want to have one hen in the house and the other outside alone. That wouldn't be a great situation. I could get two hens, but I don't think my place is big enough for that. I guess I need to move to a farm!

I have a chicken like yours! She was a rescue, when we got her she was very very sick. After she got better we rescued some neglected silkies to keep her company. She is besties with one of them, but that silkie currently broody and Cindy is lonely and hanging out inside a lot again. She perches on my shoulder and naps in my kids laps when they sit down.

I'm sorry you lost your Corgi. That's so sweet that they were such good friends.

of my Corgi. It was only two weeks ago. I will never get over it. I have attached a photo of my hen with one of my cats. I have never had a chicken before (except when we were kids) and I have soooo many questions. Right now, she is molting and there is so much white "dandruff."
