(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
I’m new to chickens, my boyfriend convinced me to get them after me refusing because I knew I’d get too emotionally attached to them...
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
3, about 4 weeks old
(3) What breeds do you have?
One barred rock and two Rhode Island reds
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
Very new to this, the chicks are still in the garage under heat lamps because it’s been freezing at night here (totally odd because we’re in Phoenix...) and I don’t trust my dogs with the chickens yet (gotta build a fence to keep them apart). But they are already so sweet and each have their own little personalities
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
I have two dogs, a 4 year old border collie and a 10 month old Australian Shepherd so I like hanging out with them at the dog park and taking them on adventures all over Arizona. We’ve even taken them to the dog beach in San Diego. They loved that. I graduated from ASU in 2016 and have been doing construction office management and estimating since.
One of my poor babies has been sneezing and breathing heavily since New Year’s Eve. We have isolated the sick chick and clean their water and bedding daily as well as rub VetRX for poultry on her nostrils and head. The vetrx has been helpful in allowing her to breath more easy but she is still sneezing so we’re looking for other remedies. I tried making them all a little bit of oatmeal with cinnamon in it as I read that cinnamon helped respiratory health in chickens. Open to suggestions, although my boyfriend has already posted about the issue on here (I think his username is Chick Daddy) and I think we’re going to search for “Tylan 50” later today.
