My name is Erica and I a, completely new to chickens. I have a lot of experience with other animals, I have a bunch but none at all for chickens. I very much want to start and I want a balanced and healthy approach to keeping a small amount, maybe 2 as it’s technically an issue here. I don’t feel good about eating factory farmed eggs. All lives are important to me so this seems to be perfect. I do have Multiple Sclerosis and my family would help only rarely so I do need the whole truth.

I am new to forums so excuse my newbie technique

Welcome :welcome Nice to have you here! Having a small flock can be very rewarding :) Check out the learning center for some info on how to get started and get some ideas on housing and chicken breeds that would work for your climate, space and situation. I would suggest to start with 3 instead of 2..... Chickens are flock animals and if something happens to one they still have a buddy. You can also look at bantams..... smaller but equally beautiful

Welcome to BYC. Use the same common sense and husbandry techniques that you have utilized with other species, and you will be successful. I would suggest starting with at least 3 - that way when something happens to one (and eventually it will) two will remain as company for one another. Good luck.

Hi Erica and welcome to our community. Wise words above :) For many of us this is our only attempt (or desire) at social media stuff so don’t worry about any faux pas - we are more than forgiving.

More generally, this is a useful link of “How to” BYC guides to take a look at announcements-feedback-issues-guides.3. I’d suggest including your location using the guide in the link. You can use this link to contact members in your area - Find your State's thread.

Best wishes
