I'm a brand new member and have been wanting to start raising chickens for a while. I'm in animal rescue, so trying to convince my hubby that despite 6 dogs, 2 cats and 4 horses (ALL SENIORS), there is still plenty of room for chickens in my life... especially after watching the video on Chicken Math! I've used similar equations to explain to my husband why 6 dogs aren't really that many - since 4 are small and should only count as 1/2 dog. So seeing this video really got me excited - lol.
I've gotten a lot of 'advice' from acquaintances, with some conflicting information, so I decided to just research on my own first - before building my coup and selecting which breeds of chickens to get. I have a 3 year old grandson and since I'd love for him to be involved, I'm looking for calm and friendly chickens that are also good layers. It looks like Buff Orpingtons, Australorp and Barred Rock are at the top of the list, but if anyone has any recommendations (or advice to a newbie), I'm all eyes (or eyes).
