I'm a brand new member and have been wanting to start raising chickens for a while. I'm in animal rescue, so trying to convince my hubby that despite 6 dogs, 2 cats and 4 horses (ALL SENIORS), there is still plenty of room for chickens in my life... especially after watching the video on Chicken Math! I've used similar equations to explain to my husband why 6 dogs aren't really that many - since 4 are small and should only count as 1/2 dog. So seeing this video really got me excited - lol.
I've gotten a lot of 'advice' from acquaintances, with some conflicting information, so I decided to just research on my own first - before building my coup and selecting which breeds of chickens to get. I have a 3 year old grandson and since I'd love for him to be involved, I'm looking for calm and friendly chickens that are also good layers. It looks like Buff Orpingtons, Australorp and Barred Rock are at the top of the list, but if anyone has any recommendations (or advice to a newbie), I'm all eyes (or eyes).
Thanks for the opportunity to join this site.

Hello, and welcome to BYC.

I'm certain that you are a quick learner and will excel at chicken math.

I've seen some stories of certain chickens ganging up on others... is that really a thing, or do the calmer breeds typically get along?
It really just depends on the temperament of your birds. There are breeds that are more docile and friendlier then others but of course some can break the mould. I have standard breeds and bantams together and they get along just fine.

:welcomeGlad you joined! Buffs, Silikes, and Barred Rocks are all good breeds. I'd also suggest Wyandottes, Brahamas, Cochins, and Easter Eggers for kid friendly breeds. Rhode Island Reds, Australorps, and Sussex are good egg laying breeds.
Great- thank you! I promised my husband I'd only get 6, but thanks to Chicken Math, it looks like I can pick 12! :woot
