I'm a fan of large girls, but if I have no success with this breed, I will certainly try bantams (another advantage of bantams is that I can fit more in my chicken pen - however my biggest turnoff is that they fly too much and there are too many ugly dogs outside my property!)

I totally get it, but the Bantam Cochins dont reallt have the flightyness like the others. They do fly but not like the others. I have English game hens, Seabrights and other bantam breeds as well as the Cochins and they are very very different.

They are the sweetest, calmest and easiest chickens i have ever owned. Alot of people dont like them because they go broooooody like crazy! I love it because i have them hatch everything for me, quail, ducks, gunieas, you name it lol

Yeah, my bantams are always jumping off of anything they can climb on. It's crazy.

Yes most bantams are flighty, however the Cochins, at least in my experience, are not.

Hello, welcome to BYC! My little cochin girls tend to roost low and not fly or explore; they are more interested in dust baths and the feed bowls. The males are more prone to flying up on fence posts to crow.

Your two hens are very beautiful. I love their fluffiness! I never heard of the breeds you mentioned, but I think that is wonderful that you are focusing on local, ancient breeds. That often means birds that are adapted to the local environment, I think. Let us know how things go!

Definitely, i free range mine and they tend to stay pretty close to the coop and dont adventure too far. I have about 27 and just hatched 20 more. They are definitely my favorite!
