Hello everyone, I'm Jamie. I'm just starting out in chickens and thought this website would give me lots of helpful pointers on how to raise them, though I already have a pretty good understanding after doing lots of research and talking to people about them. I can't wait to meet some of you on here! P.S. - What are the best breeds of chicken, for egg laying specifically? Thanks a bunch. :) - Jamie

Hello Jamie and welcome to BYC!

Lots of good layers out there, depending on exactly why you want them. Leghorns are some of the best layers out there, but they are not all that great on the friendliness or calmness scale. Very hyper birds, at least from my experiences. The Opringtons..Buff Orpingtons, Black Australorps..these 2 are excellent layers as well and calm docile breeds. Very friendly. The Barred Rocks, Easter Eggers, Wyandottes, RIR, New Hampshires, are all great layers and friendly birds as well.

Here are a couple of good breeds pages that have some quick info on the attributes of the different breeds...

Have you stopped by our learning center yet? Lots of good articles on all the aspects of keeping poultry...

Enjoy this new adventure you are on and welcome to our flock!

Please make yourself at home and we are here to help.

Leghorns, australorps, barred rocks, EEs , RIRs and wyandottes are all great layers. However, leghorns, RIRs and wyandottes are known for being skittish and mean. But australorps, EEs and barred rocks are friendly and docile.

Here are few more links to explore.

My RIRs are very friendly and I have never heard of them being skittish.. I know they can be mean though..

Hello guys, thank you very much for all of the warm welcomes! I was barely expecting any replies at all, but the community on this site seems to be very open, helpful, and friendly to everyone.

I get the chicks on Friday, I have everything set up for them, I'm just researching all of the breeds you've recommended and figuring out which ones I want. I'll probably steer clear of the more "Skittish/Mean" ones because we'll probably like a bit of friendly interaction every once in a while. Haha! I've heard so much about Easter Eggers, Black Australorps, Buff Orpingtons, and Ameraucanas are very good laying hens, as well as good tempered. So those are probably the prime breeds at the moment, as we're mainly looking for semi-good egg layers and up, but it's still up for debate. I may also steer clear of Barred Rocks, only for the reason that from some people I've heard that if you aren't starting out big, that you should should just get ALL Barred Rocks because they tend to be bossy around other breeds? It may just apply to the certain chicken, or be hearsay though. I plan on starting small, but slowly expanding as I really get into it. Thank you for all of the links, I will be checking them out momentarily. If you guys have anymore suggestions, please let me know!

Sounds like you're off to a great start!

I've never owned barred rocks so I can't help much with the whole bossiness stuff. But every chicken is unique so you may end up with a bossy or beyond friendly barred rock.

Oh, yes you'll get more chickens! It's addicting!
