I am a 32F who has finally decided to start raising some chickens for eggs. It's a strange journey to get here, but def a fun one that I am excited to share with those interested. I'm not completely uneducated, as my grandpa raised meat chickens/ducks/geese most of my life, so I know the basics, though I have never done it myself and never had experience with chickens for eggs. So I'm sure I will end up with plenty of questions and concerns that he just won't know and be asking all of you.

I'm also autistic, and tend to get hyper focused on animals, so i'll probably spend most of my time reading various threads, and less writing until I get more comfortable.

To start off I ordered about 6 Easter Egger hens and 1 Easter Egger rooster from Meyer Hatchery that will be delivered in mid October; they also might throw in 1 of their free chickens of type (so a laying chicken) that is a mystery pull for giving eggs to the community. So in total, I will have 7-8 chicks to start in about 6 months, and that gives me time to really get things set up for their arrival. I specifically chose this breed from that hatchery just because they are known to have a good variation so that I have a better chance of telling everyone apart as they grow up, though are said to be breed to have a good even temperment.

I currently live in an apartment, but I live about 3 miles from my parents property that is 43 acres that butts up to a lot of national forest and ranch lands, which is where I'm actually keeping the chickens. So I've got a ton of area, but most doesn't have access to plumbing or electricity, and has high risk to basically ALL predators, which has made planning a little tougher. For now I plan on just starting smaller near the wellhouse, with a little room to grow in the future.

I'm pretty secure I think in most of the plan, just have to do it! Though it will be great to have a community to ask get some answers when I will indefinetly need them LOL.

There are tons of great ideas to pick and choose from here: https://www.backyardchickens.com/articles/categories/chicken-coops.12/

Thankfully there are a lot of solar powered options nowadays as far as exhaust fan, small lights and coop doors . . which has been great for us. I'm thinking about setting up a rain barrel watering system too . . I just need figure out how I'd clean the pipes/sanitize the barrels from time to time . .. that's my current mental block.
