Hi fellow chicken lovers!

I did take the first egg right after she laid that just wondering if thats ok or if i should have
Let her sit on it, i was feeding them and she jumped out of the box to eat and i found it there and took it and i know she must have just laid it bc it wasnt there 20 mins before

No, you did good by taking the eggs. You don't want to leave eggs around so they get cracked or broken. This can lead to egg eating which is hard habit to stop.

Hens only set on eggs when they have "gone broody"....when their hormones tell them it is time to raise a family. You will know they are broody when they don't want to come out of the nest boxes, growl at you, raise their hackle feathers at you, etc...And if you don't keep roosters, you don't want them setting on eggs anyway. When they are not broody, they just lay the eggs and are done with them.

So keep collecting those eggs and enjoy! :-)

Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided to join our flock. Congratulations! It's always exciting getting that first egg. You did right to remove the egg for the reasons that TwoCrows gave. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Good luck in getting many more eggs.

I have a question, my hen started laying last week and the first few eggs were in the nesting box but now she just likes the dig a lil hole and lay there (inside the coop) why would she stop using the boxes?
