Hello everyone:) Starting my first flock this year. We have been wanting to for a few years and with the husband home from work right now we jumped in! After some research, I really wanted a mixed flock of docile, friendly birds that will lay well (with some pretty eggs too) and some that will be dual purpose. We started a little large and I may give some birds to a friend that also is starting some new additions. Half my chicks are about 2 weeks old and the other 1 week. I have 4 Buff Orps, 2 BS link, 1 Blk Austlrp, 4 Golden comet, 2 Barnevelder, 2 EE's, and 1 Starlight green egger (Hoover hatchery). I don't know any breeders and got all of mine from Rural King and TSC. I think one of my BO's is a roo...was last to start getting tail feathers (just sprouted today) and has the largest comb. Wondering if I should keep him or wait and find a nice established roo from someone later. My orps already rush to great me and hop on my arm when I put down in brooder:) They are all showing some personality already!

A little about me, I live on 2.5acres in south central Ohio, have 3 young kiddos and an amazing hubs. I've had rabbits and horses but this is my first with chickens. I'm a research junkie but most appreciate advice from real folks in the thick of it. PS. I have friends and family lined up already wanting eggs...but, do you think I'm biting off too much with 15-16 birds?

Hello, Amy, and welcome to BYC! :frow Glad you joined.
You can give your cockerel a chance. They aren't all rotten! I have two roosters and enjoy them immensely. Even the senior boy who flogs me. We're still working on a compromise to our differences after over a year.

It's nice to have you here, thanks for joining us! Whether you have too many is up to you and whatever you're comfortable with (and have the coop size for them).

Best wishes!
