Hi from a newbie

Well folks i did get them to eat in their new house so i took the chance closed the chicken door with them inside , picked each one up put them on the roosts them in the nesting box (es) and on top of them letting them fuss and flap , talked to them and petted them with a hand full of sunflower seeds they did simmer down, before i left i put them on the ledge in front of the nesting box and they all crowded into one lol . Later I came back to check on them they were back on top of of the nesting box huddled in the corner next to the window giving me dirty looks but they were quiet . On my way out i think I heard one of them call me an A H lol

Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided to join our flock. I've had both R.I. Reds and Buff Orps (still have BOs) and they are both hardy, dependable breeds that lay lots of large, brown eggs. I especially love Buff Orpingtons for their beauty and calm, gentle temperament. My children, and now my granddaughter, made lap pets of ours. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Good luck with your flock.

Welcome to BYC. Just wanted to point out that your chickens could probably slither under the space below the gate & escape - and predators could easily slither in to get them. Have to close up all opening before than becomes a reality.Running 1/2" hardware cloth around the perimeter of the run from ground to about 18inches upward will keep raccoons from snagging body parts and eating them off, on the spot. You birds may also decide to fly over the fence unless it has a cover. Your corgi seems to be very accepting, I just don't think she would want to be fighting fox, or raccoons, or coyotes that may try to get the chickens.

X2 on drumstick diva's suggestions for protecting your flock from predators. There is a good article on protecting your chickens from predators at http://www.the-chicken-chick.com/2013/07/11-tips-for-predator-proofing-chickens.html.

drumstick they have the run of the back yard with the dog during the day and go to their run/ pen at night . in fact i just finished building them a bigger house that is very secure and I am using the compost floor method to help give off a little heat for the winter months . For the floor (or sub floor if you will ) before i made the hen house frame I dug down 16 inches ran a layer of wire covered with 4 inches of soil and more wire (this layer was attached to the frame base ) then i made the house so far i have one south facing window with plans to put one window on each of the remaining walls) my venting is at the roof joists also secured with rat wire . so i think they are pretty safe . and the fact that i have neighbors with bigger dogs that tend to keep all the critters away . The only real concern I have is the hawks that hang out in the area , apparently their basic diet is fish from the little river not far from me (i see them flying with fish all the time) so that eases my concern a bit. My girls have bushes and brush in several parts of the yard to use as cover and sometimes during the day they will lay in the attached garage with phillip the wonder dog and take a nap with him lol

thanks for the concern and advice though

update on my girls and their new house !! tonight they went in all by themselves yayyy!! I went out to round them up with some chopped steak to lure them (they like to perch on my grill if they only knew what that thing does LOL) went to the new house and there were all 4 of them on one of the high perches sleeping with their eyes open they wouldnt even eat the steak so i left it in their feeder .
