In the Brooder
Hi, I'm a new chick "mom" in Alabama. Got my chicks last Wednesday from the local co-op. I have 2 Aracauna's, 2 Barred Rocks, and one Rhode Island Red. The rhodi is the younger of the 5, maybe by a week or 2 but has shown she is a kind of diva, wanting to be the center of attention, pushing the other chicks out of the way if they are in her way. Hence her name, Diva. My light colored Aracauna is named Stella (Artois after the beer by my husband) and seems to already be kicking in as the "mother hen" of the group. The brown colored Aracauna is named Lucy in the Sky since she took a flying leap off our deck the day we brought them home. I already had read here about pasty butt on chicks and had to deal with that the very day we brought them home. Thankfully I knew what to do. Hence the name Lucy in the Sky...she was flapping her wings as I was working the pasty butt off and there she went. No harm done. Then there is Cutie Pie the Barred Rock that my daughter named and last but not least there is Suzy Q, who I think will need to be renamed because she might actually be a he! LOL
The chicks already show a lot of personality and it has been interesting and fun over the last week to watch them and learn from them.
I am using a big storage tub as my brooder with a brooder lamp that has already had to be raised. Even though I had the chicks waterer raised, I had to raise it again because they keep getting their bedding material in it. They are messy little things aren't they?
I am building the coop myself using pallets. Looking forward to the end result.
