Hey everyone!

So excited to have found such a great community of chicken enthusiasts. I currently live in Ann Arbor, MI, and I grow black soldier fly larvae off brewers' grains and then harvest the larvae as a delicious high-protein chicken treat.

My parents own a restaurant, and they source all the meat and produce locally and organically when possible. I'm interested in building better food systems, and recycling the nutrients from food back into the food chain seems like a good place to start.

Has anyone else heard of black soldier fly larvae? Anyone feed them to their chickens?

Hi Maya,

Are you still growing black soldier fly larvae? I teach a 3rd/4th-grade classroom in Ann Arbor and we are interested in this for our students as we think about both a compost system for our school and food for the small flock of hens we will be raising onsite. I'm wondering if you have any resources or would be up for a workshop with us in the fall where we could learn more about your system. Thanks.

Hi Maya, I also live in Michigan, more west-side. Curious on your winter setup for Black Soldier Flies. Are you still doing this 7 years later by chance?
