Hi everyone~ we have had chicken over the past 10 years. We love the fresh eggs and just having chickens around. We have had mostly banties, then the easter egg chickens and now just an odd mix of chickens until we lost them to possums. We just lost 3 for our hens to possums, so we are down to one hen. We just got a new rooster, Puddles, that is a silky cross. We were given him because an older rooster was beating him up badly. Puddles has a few scabs on his waddle and on the top of his head on his comb which is flat and bumpy. He is a very sweet rooster and lets me take care of his boo-boos. I hope to have a few peeps in the near future.

Hello and Welcome To BYC! Sorry about your losses, opossums can be nasty predators. Sounds like Puddles is a lucky rooster to have found you the poor boy. Good luck with your new chicks when you get them.
You might like to check out the Predator forum for ideas on dealing with them and other predators https://www.backyardchickens.com/f/13/predators-and-pests
And be sure to check out the BYC Learning Center, lots of articles on all aspects of chicken keeping! https://www.backyardchickens.com/atype/1/Learning_Center

Welcome to BYC!

Sorry for all the losses. I would follow the links that Kelsie has provided for more info on protecting your flock in the future.

Enjoy your rooster! He sounds like a sweety. Welcome to our flock!

Glad you joined! Have you decided how to take care of your oppossum problem? I hope Puddles recovers from his wounds.

Good luck with your poultry raising adventures, and I hope you find everything you need to know. Don't forget to take a look at BYC's very useful learning center (If you haven't already)! The learning center as well as the forum should answer your questions! Glad to have you here! Sorry about those predators.

Thank you for welcoming me! That is one of the saddest things about having a chicken coop is when a predator invades and kills your chickens. We have had it happen over the years at least 3 times. 1st time-rapid fox 2nd time-a neighbor's dog broke the fencing (they escaped (except one) but never came home turned but up on a neighbor's farm) and now 3rd time-2 possums. Each time I lost one of my favorite chickens. The fox killed my favorite chicken sitting on her nest hatching her peeps. 2nd chicken she just escaped several days after the neighbors dog terrorized her and the rest of the flock . 3rd the possums killer her first because she was super friendly. I hope we can keep Puddles save with his new misses. I sent the owner and her daughter a picture of Puddles in his new home and she said he looks happy. Now I just got to get his boo-boos healed.
