Hi from Burnsville, MN

Hi Red Squirrel - I live in New Prague, MN about 20 minutes from Burnsville... We had 4 bantees last winter. I now have 24 golden laced Wyandottes pullets for my 6th grader's 4H project. We have an acre lot & have gotten to the point we can let the girls roam. We don't do that though unless we are home as they travel to the yard limits and I have dogs on all three sides!!

So far so good - the canines are on collars or fences!

As far as keeping them for the winter - we used two red lamps for the bantees in a ceiling only insulated coop. We didn't see too much of an electric jump. They say though chickens just need to be protected from the wind. I don't know if I agree as ours got frost bite on the combs. The other advise was to rub patroleum jelly on combs as that increases circulation. My bantees were adopted and wouldn't let use hold them - so the comb treatment wasn't really an option. Anyways - that is what I know at this point. You will also need to get a heated water bowl. Fleet Farm was where we purchase a heated dog bowl and that worked great.

I will check back to see what other things you may need to know - Welcome!! numamahen

Hi everyone,
Thanks for the welcomes.
Hi Numa from New Prague. Yes I will probably have lots of questions-lol
Right now I am going to let my broody hens try and hatch out some eggs I have ordered from people on here. Hopefully I will end up with some chicks-will be a fun experience for me and my kids.
