I came across this forum while looking for zoning ordinances for our area, and the question was answered! So helpful! We just moved into a house and it's been my dream to have chickens the past two years! We lived in South Carolina before moving to Colorado and we were stuck in an underground apartment for the past two years until fate intervened while I was selling Girl Scout Cookies with my daughter.
Anyway, it turns out we are zoned for chickens here in Lakewood (R-1-6), and I'm so excited! We are a family of four with a big dog and our next door neighbors are bunny breeders and our best friends. I love bunnies...they are so cute, but sort of useless except for their poop (unless you plan on eating them of course). Long story short, friend is giving us a bunny as a gift. So we have two kids, a large dog, and a bun. Hopefully soon we'll be adding an apiary (beebox)...and CHICKENS! We also intend on doing a 100% edible garden, right down to the flowers. Basically I'm wanting to be as self-sufficient as possible. Can't wait to learn more about chickens and everyone else!
I've been doing some research and so far I know I'd like an Americana and at least two Cherry Eggers. I may or may not get a fourth hen. Also been looking at designs for coops. So many from which to choose! I would prefer something on the small side. We actually have a big gardening shed on the northeast side of our backyard but we can't move it, and there's no room inside for hens. Can't wait to hear veterans' suggestions and advice!
