Hi All,
New member, new chicken owner. I have been reading posts on this sight for quite a while. I have learned quite a bit from all of you. Back in January, I ordered 25 chicks from McMurray. I was really nervous about having them shipped and kept telling myself that I could cancel the order if I found what I wanted locally. Well, I didn't cancel the order and on Monday, the PO called about 6am to tell me that my chicks had arrived. I was ready for them. Thankfully, all arrived in good shape and have not had any problems. I know, its early yet. I started with 27. I ordered eight Delaware pullets, 8 Rhode Island Reds pullets, 8 Buff Orpington pullets and one Delaware rooster. They also sent an extra Delaware rooster and an exotic with feathers on his feet. Not sure what he is. A co-worker took three so I have 24. I am ultimately looking to get down to about 10. I would like to wait and see how things develop. I have a few neighbors who have chickens so I may be checking around to see if any are interested in a few more. If anyone close by is interested in a few later in the spring, shoot me an email.
We recently built a coop with an attached run. The coop is 6 x 8. The run is 8 x 16. The security of the chickens has been our priority. In our area, we have the usual assortment
of predators. Hawks will probably be our main problem. There will be no free ranging unless one of us is outside with the chickens. We have two dogs, one Great Dane and one Jack Russell. I don't trust either one of them. The Dane has seen the chicks out in the garage and does not seem interested. However, he is just to powerful. He is gentle but I just don't want to take any chances. And the other, well, is a typical terrier.
I really enjoy this site and like I said, have learned a lot from reading all of your post in the last few months. There is something really special about owning chickens. It is not even about the eggs, even though we do look forward to trying them out. They have personalities and are already very entertaining. Even our grown up, city slicker sons think the chicks are very cool.
Take care,
Terri
