Hi from east texas

Hello there Texas! A Florida member saying
Welcome To Back Yard Chickens!
Great to have you.
I have learned so much and try to share that knowledge every chance I get!
Some really great advice within this site!
I hope you enjoy it!

I'm new to the chick world ! Is it ok to mix breeds? if so what should I put with my orpingtons? They are still chicks.

Mixing breeds of the same size I would recommend.
Also some breeds cam be more aggressive than others. I would research the mannerisms of the breeds you desire first as well as how big they cam get.
I have several kinds of breeds housed together with no probs.
Best regards.

Welcome to Backyard chickens. If you intend to mix them to have chicks/birds to sell, I think purebreds probably sell easier and for more $$$. If they are just for your own enjoyment, have some fun mixing breeds .

Welcome- I am still a newbie but reading and absorbing info daily. This is a great site! I have 5 hens; 2 gold sex links, 2 black sex links, and 1 Dominique. I have noticed that the Dom gets picked on the most, which is a shame cause she was the sweetest. The last time I held her she was punished by getting pecked really hard- it broke my heart. I try not to let it bother me too much because, there does have to be a pecking order- she just happens to be at the bottom of that order. Mixing the breeds is okay, but I have learned that they will pick on the ones that are different- like my Dom- or the ones that have larger combs or wattles because they stand out and draw the attention.

Some breeds can and will be bullies. Bummer town, but pecking order comes with the territory. I try not to mix pretty show birds with huge heritage egg producers. Multi housing now comes into play.
