We have RI Reds bantams Plymouth barred rocks buff orps and easter eggers. We also have one German Giant, 'Goldie' looking for tips to keep the pens dry or improve drainage. Goldie and one of our reds have vent gleet. I think Goldie will be OK O followed tips from Sally but our Scruffy isn't doing do well. I think it's too wet in the pens. Looking forward to hearing from everyone!

Hello and welcome to BYC! :welcome

Here's a little something for you to read to help possibly with your drainage issue. I think most of us have this problem with the spring rain!

Pasty butt, such an issue with little ones, sometimes bigger chicks too, go here, https://www.backyardchickens.com/a/vent-gleet-aka-nasty-chicken-butt I hope it helps clear up your problem. I have sat them under warm running water and let it get real slick with a little dawn dish soap and it comes right off!

Have you been to our learning center yet? They have some really informative articles to read, here is the link to it, https://www.backyardchickens.com/atype/1/Learning_Center.

Also if you need anything or have questions about your new ones this thread is really good, https://www.backyardchickens.com/a/how-to-raise-baby

Welcome to BYC!

If you suspect vent gleet, you can tell by the smell of the butt feathers and many times the vent is swollen red. If this is the case, the best things you can do is use vaginal cream on the vent area daily and add probiotics to the water every day. You will need to change it an make a new batch daily. Wash her butt off well and get it really clean first. Trim off any feathers if you have to to prevent all the nasty poop from sticking to it. Then apply the cream. If this doesn't help her, you can also do an epsom salt drench for 24 hours and this can help kill off the yeast in the intestinal tract. If you need more help with this, you can post this question in our emergency section...

As for drainage, you may need to cut drainage channels or re dig the run so it is on a slant. The rain water will then run off. You might also consider sand in your run. Sand can help in certain situations. Here is a good thread on using sand...

You can also post questions and or pics in our Coop and Run Construction for more help with this issue...

Good luck with your run project and your birds with the issues. I hope you can get all this solved soon!
