Hello from the island of Oahu. I'm new to BYC, but this is my 4th round at raising chickens.

Round one, I had a couple of white hens and a rooster (gaming type) growing up in Aiea. My brother hated the rooster and would throw his shoes at it in the morning to try and shut it up. I wonder what happened to those. I know they didn't die of natural causes. My dad just kinda told me he gave them away or something, but I have a feeling they were killed for meat.

2nd round, was two years ago, when I got 2 free chicks from a friend who knew a farmer. Couldn't exactly tell me what type they were, but they looked somewhat like RIRs. After two months of raising these chicks and they were starting to look like dinosaurs and was doing great in our backyard, newly built DIY tractor type coop. Just had to move the coop every few days cause the grass was all eaten up and poop all over. Then me and my wife got happily married and on the day after our wedding, I get a call from my brother, "I have some bad news." His dogs ate our chickens! Actually just killed and played with. His dogs are usually kept separate, but I guess since no one was home for long time, they somehow got into the chicken's area. We have two dogs too btw, but they weren't at fault. Oh well.

Round 3, me and my wife went into the Kaneohe feed store (don't know why), and to our surprise, had some chicks for sale. We picked up a Plymouth Rock and a Road Island Red chick. After a few weeks, I decided they looked old enough to move into our coop. I was wrong, found a dug up tunnel going under the cage. Looked like a mongoose got them both. I didn't think that would happen since my 2nd round chickens were just fine, but I guess I did put them in until they were bigger. My wife still likes to remind me that she told me they were still too little. **** I hate when she's right.

And now it's round 4. My wife picked up a Plymouth Rock again from Kaneohe feed store. And about a month later we went to Asagi Hatchery and picked up a hybrid (White Leghorn father/ Road Island Red mother). So, now we're moving from our Aiea house to Moanolua and hopefully we'll find a way to successfully raise our two chickens that are a month apart and different breeds, and keep our two dogs from killing them. It's going to be a challenge, but we're up for the task.
