Hi from Jeff Stone

Hiya, Jeff, and welcome to BYC! :frow

Congrats on your retirement! 🥳 🥰

Yes, I'm retired from GBPD (Green Bay PD) by about 8 years now, but didn't really retire totally as I picked up a gig typing federal immigration/deportation/asylum hearings from home about the same time. I can't say it's the same thing by far, but it is interesting to say the least, and I've learned a lot.

We raise/breed solely silkies here in the boonies of Wisconsin now. My signature says it...living the dream.

Do you have any pictures of your ladies? What kind do you have? We all love to see poultry photos.

To swap stories about feed, I'll just share ours, which many do similar, yet, many others feed different brands, and they're all great!

These silkies, chicks and adults, have been on Kalmbach's Flock Maker for about three years, I believe. Prior to that, Dumor crumbles, but TSC was always out of it so we switched.

For "scratch," they get Kalmbach's Henhouse Reserve, which is actually a good feed, but they picked through it too much, so now that's their scratch. There is a feeder with oyster shell in the pens/coops where laying hens are as whilst the Flock Maker is higher in protein, which is good for all ages, it's low in calcium, which is great for everyone but the laying hens.

If you have questions, there are so many helpful folks, so you can ask here or find the forum that best fits under the Forum tab above, and post your question(s) there.

Make yourself at home! We're glad you're here!
First, in having been kept real busy these last days, I am behind in getting forward. I'm sorry for my delay.

But now excuses are done with, hi there!

Thanks so much for the warm welcome—and congrats to you as well on your own retirement! It’s great to hear you’re keeping busy and learning new things with your gig. It’s always good to have something that keeps the brain engaged, retirement can be so much a thanks for coming and see ya, and it can feel like a sudden stop.

Your silkies sound like a real joy! I’ve heard a lot that they’re great little birds. I don’t have any photos of my ladies just yet, (2nd tardy slip awarded to me there), but I’ll be sure to share soon. I’ve got a mix of chickens and ducks as of right now—egg laying machines somewhat. Still getting the hang of it all. But it’s been a lot of fun so far.

I appreciate the info on your feed! It’s always interesting to see what others are using and what works for them. I’m still figuring out what’s best for mine, trying to formulate one of my own, but it sounds like you’ve found a good routine with the Kalmbach and Henhouse Reserve. I’ll definitely keep that in mind for when I need to switch things up.

Thanks again for the warm welcome and for all the helpful tips! I’m looking forward to connecting more with everyone here.

Best,
Jeff

To everyone who said hi when I was off air and planning out some things, please I hope you can accept my apologies. I'm not fit to be rude to anyone. I am thankful you are all so warm and welcoming.

Chickens do have their problems right? Which I have one needing lavage as of around 7 this morning. Thanks to my friend Carlos for donating me the one that needed the most work on it done.

But big thanks to each and every one of you for making me feel so welcome.

Let me say again, I sure hope I didn't miss anyone out when saying thank you to the welcomes. If I did, I am sorry. You may throw a tomato at me (an egg? no, too precious a thing).

Have been dealing with old injuries. Been keeping me pretty busy somewhat. Luckily here winter wasn't the usual miserable self. Maybe no cause for joy, given the weather patterns seem to change more than change back nowdays. And a ruby throat humming bird came by just to peek in and see what the deal was with all. It was a nice sight, maybe not one particularly rare. But I'll take it. Got some pics here some place (to answer long pending requests). It's a matter of finding them now, amidst the chaos that has abruptly set on my laptop.
