Hi. I’m Katie. I teach preschool special Ed. We got our first chickens last year during the lockdowns. I though it would be something fun to do with my students over zoom. They loved it and I was obsessed, lol. I have them all Disney princess names so the kids would be familiar and also to bug my own teen boys. My niece started calling them the Princess Chickens and it stuck.
I started with six mixed breeds. The lady who sold them to me referred to it as the variety pack. One turned out to be a rooster so we rehomed. That left me with the original five, one buff Brahma, one buff Orpington, one RIR, and 2 cuckoo marans.
This year one of the marans went broody. We tried to break it to no avail. We ended up putting 2 Welsummer chicks under her one night. It was love at first sight. She’s been a wonderful mama. We will have one more Princess join the flock but the other chick is a roo so I’m again looking to rehome.
I always wanted chickens snd they have not felt disappointed. I’m nuts about them. My three indoor cats and one dog love to watch them out the window.
