We were recently adopted by 3 orphaned chickens. They were orphaned Christmas week when their owner was murdered in his home about a quarter mile from us. I walked over there to feed them every day after the sherriff and state police finished the investigation. When the feed ran out, I bought more but kept it in my carport instead of at Bobby's. Thats when they started following me home.
That led to us starting to learn more about them. I now know they are American Game birds. A hen and 2 roosters. They are well behaved and get along with the cat, and my parent's Jack Russell Terriers who live next door.
One of the roosters, we named RuPaul, is mostly alone or following us around. He is beautiful, All cream, blond, with bright copper patches. He really looks like a decked out drag Queen:
The hen, Skinny Chick, has started a cluth of eggs in a sheltered flower bed in our front yard. There is 8 or 9 eggs but she has not started sitting. The bossy rooster is also very handsome. He is much darker with red markings on his body and a greenish black tail. He is colored a lot like that beautiful rooster, Solaris, in the 'stories and picts' forum, in the most handsome rooster contest.
I think I would like to try incubating some of Skimmy Chick's eggs one day if she is not successful in raising a brood. We are in a very rual area, on 80 acres with a swampy creek at the back of the property. Lots of critters that would love to eat chicken and/or eggs. If I raise some from hatchlings they would be easy to handle and be used to being put up at night.
I feel good that Bobby's pets are enjoying life with us. I want them to live out their lives as healthy and happy as possible. Bobby lived alone with only his chickens for company and he took good care of them. I am so glad BYC is here to help me do it right. Thanks, Ya'll.
