Hi from Northern Alberta!
My name is Iris and we just got our first chickens ~2 weeks ago. They are now between 3-4 weeks old. We have 2 Ameraucana (one of which I think is a rooster), 2 Wyandotte, and 2 Orpington. My choice of breeds was based on our cold and long winter climate.
Hubby built the chickens (or my peeps as I call them since they only say "PeepPeep" right now) a cute little coop with an attached run. Pictures to follow.

Also on the property are 4 sheep. We got sheep last spring to help keep our ~3acres of forest/bush under control. they do an excellent job! For now the chickens coop on the sheep side of the fence until our dog learns they are NOT his to chase. In the meantime the sheep like to stare and look at the chickens especially in the mornings when I open the coop ;)

Speaking about the dog, we also have a large Briard (dog) who is just full of energy!

I am sure as winter approaches I will have lots of questions on how to keep our chickens comfortable. For now I can't wait for them to start laying which is just when winter starts. :S

So glad you could join our community! Basskids has left you with some great links to follow. Good luck with all your projects and welcome to our flock!

Welcome to BYC! You have picked some good breeds for cold climates. Just post any questions you may have on the forum and I'm sure you'll get lots of answers. Make sure that your coop and run are predator proof (hardware cloth, not chicken wire as there are too many predators that can tear through chicken wire or pass through the openings in the mesh), and that your chickens do not become dinner for your dog (dogs and chickens seldom mix well). Good luck with your flock.

Thank you all for the warm welcome! Looking forward to chatting with you all and talking about chickens.

So far they seem like excellent mosquito and tiny biting fly catchers!
