Northern California
Hi everyone. My husband and I (and two hardly-ever-home teenaged kids) are starting a new adventure this year. Once the fruits of my research confirmed that our city allowed chickens, off to the feed store we went and five chicks came home with us. We got three Rhode Island Reds and two Black Australorps. Although the feed store said they were "pretty sure" they were pullets, four weeks later, we are "more sure" one is a misnamed cockerel ... Big Bertha is now Bert with a beautiful comb and lovely wa- wa- wattles is it? ...growing beneath his eyes.
Anyway, not to get into too much detail, we are the garden variety urban backyard chicken farmer type - designing and building a garden coop - and learning as we go.
This is a grand adventure and the first time I've ever become a member of any type of web-community type thing. But I love my chickens already, and it appears so do all the members of this web site.
(Funny little anecdote some old mother hens (and roosters) might relate to: I found myself sleeping with "one eye open" the first few nights the chicks were home, listening, making sure they were all safe and sound...like I did those many first nights as a new mommy.)

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! What cute chicks! How nice that your city allows chickens! They are a lot of fun and do make amazingly good pets. If that is Big Bert on the far right in the first picture there, sure looks like he deserves his name... will you be able to keep a rooster?

What cute babies! Yes, you become like a nervous mother and can't sleep for hearing noises in the night!! As many times I have brooded chicks, I still get up at midnight to check on them.

Great to have you aboard and if you have any questions, feel free to ask!

Thank you for welcoming me. :) Yes, that is him, on the right. He is bigger than the other two RIR's.

Our city does not allow roosters. However, one of my friends has very generously agreed to take Big Bert in, as she has about 8 hens of her own and is looking for a rooster to protect her flock. Her ladies are about 4 weeks older than Bert. Here's a better picture of Bert, showing off his awkward side. ;) We are hoping her flock accepts him, and he's not too aggressive with her ladies.

Welcome to BYC! There is a very active & helpful group on the Northern California thread. Lots of support, advice & enabling in our shared chicken addiction! If you'd like to get to know some of us in person, see the link in my signature. We're having a gathering :)
