hi! I live in Olympia too & we have a handful of chicks in the brooder now too. they are wonderful to watch, and we are greatly enjoying their chickhood. from my reading, bantams can successfully be members of a standard-sized flock, although they may always be better at flying because they are lighter. you can cut their wing feathers (search the byc forums for tips) or build a ceiling on your pen to keep them in. they sound really cute though. i know a lot of people in oly keep more than 3 birds - stay on your neighbors' good sides & buy their affection with eggs? have you considered listing the extras on craigslist? or put flyers around town, like at the co-op, or the feed stores?

I'm not sure about Shelton. Are you going to live in the city limits proper, or in the county? If you are in the county, it is probably a "right to farm" community like Thurston County - where you can have as many chooks as you want as long as they are not being mistreated/abused/etc. In the city limits, I have no idea. I would call the city and ask directly if I were in your situation. I like to know the rules before I bend them. Ahem.
 
Welcome from WA State too . . . we are up north of Seattle!

As for roosters -- as growing chicks they usually have bigger redder combs before the hens. When the tail and hackle feathers (feathers on the back right by the tail) come in they are usually very long narrow and pointy. And eventually they will start to crow : )

We have bantams in with our full sized chickens and they do fine - especially if they are all raised together. Bantams are also good broody hens, so you might be able to set some eggs next year. They do fly well - except for the Silkies - and so you probably will need to clip wing feathers -- harmless to the chickens, it is just like cutting a dogs hair . . .

I've advertised my extra roosters for free on craigslist and freecycle, and usually someone will take them.

EDIT: This is what I found...

"7.08.010 Fowl at large prohibited—Keeping under sanitary conditions.

It is unlawful for any person, firm, company or corporation to permit any poultry, pigeon, dove, or any other domestic fowl to run, roam, wander or fly at large. The same shall be kept and maintained under sanitary conditions on the premises of the owners. (Prior code § 7.08.010)
7.08.020 Fowl to be maintained in sanitary fashion.

No person within the limits of the city of Shelton shall keep poultry, pigeon, dove or any other domestic fowl except under sanitary conditions. (Prior code § 7.08.020)"
